All Volvo EC350 trucks have a low side port for the AC. To find it disconnect a load carrying component and look for the port. Shut down the truck before doing anything to prevent damage appropriate tools are needed and you need to know what parts to look at.

Once loose, gently lower the power steering pump down toward your lap so that you have some room to work with it.

The other day we posted a warning about AC gauges designed for R12 refrigerant. To recap, gauges designed for R134a refrigerant have a yellow hose while R12 gauges have blue hoses. As we noted, the hoses on both gauges are identical, meaning it’s possible to interchange them. However, this is not recommended as fluids can leak through the valves on the side of the gauge.

Another reason why you should never use an R12 gauge on an R134a system is because of the different pressures at which each refrigerant operates. R134a has a lower pressure than R12. This means that if you use an R12 gauge it will read much higher than what your Volvo’s system actually contains.

For example, if you connect your car’s AC system to a set of charging hoses that are attached to an old-style (R12) gauge set and read 100psi, that would mean that your system is charged correctly and ready for the summer months ahead. Not so! In fact your system would be way undercharged!

That’s because older R12 systems operate at much higher pressures than systems using 134a. For example, a fully charged R12 system running at normal temperatures would normally operate
