The EW160E and EW180E models are powered by a new Volvo D6J six-cylinder diesel engine. It is the first engine to be equipped with Volvo’s new E-ECO mode, which is said to significantly reduce fuel consumption. The auto-idle feature reduces engine revs when the machine is not in use, thereby reducing idle time and fuel consumption.

The power is transmitted through an automatic torque converter transmission to a hydrostatic travel drive, which permits infinitely variable speeds up to 3.2km/h in reverse and 4.4km/h forward.

The hydraulic system has been designed to offer best-in-class controllability and high productivity, says Volvo. The machines have four working modes that can be selected via the touch screen in the cab, or by using the rocker switch on the control lever: Power, Standard, Economy and Fine. The operator can also adjust the response speed of the controls to suit his or her preference.
